Who has become king without our knowledge?

1 Kings 1:11

King David had become old and advanced in years. Meanwhile, Adonijah exalted himself and prepared himself to be the king. Joab and Abiathar also followed him. The Bible tells us that “He was also a very handsome man, and he was born next after Solomon” (1 Ki. 1:6). He sacrificed sheep, oxen and fattened cattle and invited the kings sons and the officials of Judah.

Nathan then went to Bathsheba (David’s wife, Solomon’s mother) and told her, “Have you not heard that Adonijah son of Haggith has become king and our lord David does not know it?” (1 Ki. 1:11). Nathan then told Bathsheba how she and Solomon should be saved.

Let us consider these words once again, looking at our personal Christian lives and even the church today. While we may think that we are following Jesus Christ, let us ask this question to ourselves: Who or what has really become the king without our knowledge? It is possible that worldly things have become our rulers and we have not prepared for it at all. Adonijah was a handsome man. Worldly wealth and riches are also equally attractive. But, when other things besides Jesus Christ begin to rule over us, we will surely spiral down and become enslaved to sin, either slowly or quickly. How many Adonijahs have we reared to rule over us today?

Let us be careful of our ways today. Let us consider these words again carefully: “Have you not heard that Adonijah son of Haggith has become king and our lord David does not know it?”
