David rose from the ground… went into the house of the LORD, and worshipped

2 Samuel 12:20

David sinned. He slept with Bathsheba and killed her husband. “The thing that David had done displeased the LORD” (2 Sam. 11:27).

The Prophet Nathan was sent to David to tell him of his sins and what will become of him. Regarding the son that was born to David from Bathsheba, Nathan said, “the child that is born to you shall die” (2 Sam. 12:14). The LORD then struck the child who became very ill.

Then, David pleaded with God for the child and refused to eat, and lay on the ground. This went on for seven days until the child died. Fearing that David might do something to himself if he knew the child was dead, his servants were quite reluctant to tell him of the death of his child. But David overheard them and “rose from the ground, washed, anointed himself, and changed his clothes. He went into the house of the LORD, and worshipped” (2 Sam. 12:20).

King David, though he sinned, always longed for the LORD. He never blamed to LORD for what happened nor do we see him grumble about anything. He, instead, washed and cleaned himself and went into the house of the LORD and worshipped.

Many Christians today tend to blame others (including God) for their misfortunes and behaved with disdain. They become more and more frustrated with their lives. They neglected going to Church, backsliding and sought solace in intoxicants. How silly and condemnable!

How useless and insignificant will our grumblings and complaints be in the eternal plans of the LORD! We, who have received His wonderful forgiveness, salvation and blessings must always draw nearer to Him in all circumstances like David. Let us give thanks to the LORD in all circumstances and situations and worship Him with gladness.

This is, indeed, what we ought to do, we frail creatures.

Luke 17:10 also says, “So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty’” (cf. Eccl. 12:13)
