Hezekiah’s Ilness

2 Ki. 20:1-11

King Hezekiah became sick and the word of the LORD came to him, “Set your house in order, for you shall die; you shall not recover” (2 Ki. 20:1). How shocking it would have been for Hezekiah! Hezekiah faced the wall and then prayed to the LORD and beseeched the LORD to remember all the good things he had done for Him, while weeping bitterly. Then the LORD heard his prayers and healed him and added many years to Hezekiah’s life. The LORD even  brought the shadow back ten intervals to show that He will do what He said He would.

  1. How would we react if the words that came to Hezekiah was to come upon us today? It would not be only about setting our house in order, it would also involve setting our eternal life in order. Let this wake us from our slumber and make us realise the ephemerality of our lives and the need to secure our place in heaven.
  2. The first thing Hezekiah did was to pray to the LORD. How good it is to pray to the LORD, the ever present help, the One who holds our future!
  3. Hezekiah told the LORD all the good things that he did. What good have we done to present to the LORD?
  4. God is the ultimate authority over everything. He listens to our prayers. He is the God we serve today. Let us revere Him and work in humility for Him.
