God had promised Abram that he will be the father of many people, as many as the stars in heaven (Gen. 15:5). Now, Abram was about 86 years of age, and still without an heir. Both he and Sarai were worried. Then, they made a plan of their own: Abram will go in to Hagar, the Egyptian slave of Sarai, so that Sarai may obtain children by her.

Abram listened to Sarai, and so Hagar conceived. Since then, the slave girl began to look at Sarai with contempt. They have sunk deep into the mire. The small annoyance before had now become a full-blown problem.

To be fair, when we think of the trouble Abram and Sarai were in, it seemed appropriate to make the plan they made. But, to bypass the promise of God, and to make arrangements of their own so that the promise may come to fruition was a completely foolish thing to do.

Likewise, we often become too impatient to wait for the Lord that we make plans of our own. As such, we tend to embroil ourselves into much difficulties. Many of us chase after earthly wealth that we “pierced ourselves with many pains” (1 Tim. 6:10).

If only Abram had waited upon the Lord! If only Saul had waited for Samuel and the Lord (1 Sam. 13:1-23).

Let us wait upon the Lord and let us not be reckless today. Even if things do not go the way we wanted, let us never lose hope and bring unnecessary pains in our lives. The Lord is everywhere and knows our every needs. He will give us what we need when we need it, not our every whims and earthly desires.
