Heirs

Gen. 15:3-6

God promised Abram that He will give him land, that He will make his name great and that He will bless him. But, Abram had been without an heir for so long that he began to worry. He worried that the Eliezer of Damascus might become his inheritor since he was without an offspring. Indeed, it was a worrisome thing, if we think in terms of what humans usually do. Now, Abram trusted in the Lord and obeyed Him. The Lord remembered his servant and told him, “This man shall not be your heir, not one but your very own shall be your heir” (Gen. 15:4). And so, Isaac was born to Abram. Abraham became the primogenitor of many people of the earth, even to the Saviour of the world – Lord Jesus Christ.

Today, we, the Eliezers of Damascus, sinners have now also become heirs through Abram’s obedience and trust in the Lord. How? “He [Abram] believed the Lord; and the Lord reckoned it to him as righteousness” (Gen. 15:6). So, like Abram, our faith in Jesus Christ is reckoned as our righteousness. This faith has elevated us sinners to become heirs too. Romans 8:16-17 tells us that we are children of God through this faith, “and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ.” How wonderful! May the Lord be praised for his grace and mercy and for having elevated us to the position of heirs to sinners like us.
