Before the king
Es. 5:1-3
Queen Esther appeared before king Ahasuerus. Earlier, the king had given the order to destroy all the Jews; and Esther appeared to plead for her people. Esther could have been killed because she appeared before the king without being summoned or called. But as Esther appeared before the king, the king held out the golden sceptre and won his favour. If the king hadn’t held out the sceptre, Esther would have died. But she went, to save her people.
There are many lessons to be learned from this incident and story. But today, we will speak of only one.
Ahasuerus was the great Persian king. To appear before him was always a matter of life and death for anyone. Even today, for commoners to appear before great leaders or politicians or people in power is no small matter. If you were Esther, would you have done what she did?
- Esther appeared before a great king. We are also before the King of kings. While He is a great king, He is filled with compassion for us, holding up the sceptre. To save ourselves and our people, let us also come to Him today and not delay.
- Esther did not appear before the king at the spur of the moment. She and all the Jews fasted for three days before she appeared before the king. How do we appear before the LORD? Shouldn’t we also pray and humble ourselves before the Lord of lords?
- She knew that what happened to her people would also happen to her (Es 4:13). Knowing this, she went out to save her people.
- She was not called. But see, we are called by the LORD to come to Him.
- She did not have any advocate. We have an advocate in Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour.
