An Altar of Stone
“If you make me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of hewn stones, if you wield your tool on it you profane it.” Ex. 20:25
The LORD instructed Moses to make Him an altar of stone where offerings were to be performed. But, the stone altar was not to be made of hewn stone, a stone shaped by man. If Moses used such hewn stones, the altar would be profaned.
As we read this, we also understand that the Word of God cannot be diluted with human wisdom and understanding. In fact, our oratory skills, our knowledge, our understanding, our so-called wisdom, our pride, our sins can never go along with the Word of God. But we have been trying to do this all the time. It is now time to stop all this.
Deuteronomy 4:2 is very clear on this: “You shall not add to the word that I command you, nor take from it” (cf Deut. 12:32; Rev. 22:18).
