In defiance of God

Gen. 11:1-9

“The Lord saw that the wickedness of humankind was great in the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of their hearts was only evil continually” (Gen. 6:5). Then, came the flood. Noah, a righteous man and his family were saved. But again, the earth came to filled with evil.

In Genesis 11, man planned to build a city and a tower. Out of many, let us take up four points:

  1. In trying to build a tower that reaches up to the heavens, they displayed their defiance to the Almighty God.
  2. In trying to make a name for themselves, they showed how selfish they were. Their pride led to their fall.
  3. In trying to prevent their scattering, they were in defiance of the Lord who told them to spread over the face of the earth.
  4. Some argued that the attempt to build a tower was to save themselves from another flood. The Lord had promised “never again” and had set a rainbow as a sign. Who were they to not trust in the promise the Lord made?

What rebellion, what defiance would we lead against the Lord today?

  1. Do we think, because of all the technological advancements and innovations, that we are becoming more like God?
  2. Our attempts to make names for ourselves, chasing after earthly riches and glory only shows our shallowness.
  3. Our failure to trust in the Lord and His promises shows our real hypocrisy.

What are we today? Aren’t we mere rags, a lowly worm?
