Be still and know that I am God

Ps. 46:10

The Hebrew word for ‘be still’ is רפה which means, to release, to drop or put down. It usually means to put down one’s hands. This, in turn, means doing nothing, not to tire oneself, not to exert any energy. Therefore, when the Psalmist says ‘be still,’ he means to completely trust in the LORD, not worry and not run amok trying to do something futile. It’s like what is written in Exodus, “Fear not, stand firm.”

Secondly, God says, “know that I am God.” In common parlance, this could mean, “Look, look at what I am doing and know that I am God.” In Psalm 46:2-3, we see the glory and might of God. All of these point to one thing – God is great.

Let us ponder upon these two points:

1. It is good for man to ‘be still’ before God and simply trust in Him. Whatever man does is always futile.
2. The reason for our complete trust is that He is God.
