God’s Whisper

1 Kings 19:1-18

Elijah was a great prophet of the Lord. In the name of the Lord, he prophesied that there would be no rain nor dew upon Israel, it came to be; in the name of the Lord, he raised up the dead; he defeated the prophets of Baal at mount Carmel, calling down fire from heaven; he prayed for rain, and it came.

Soon after, he fled to Horeb out of fear of Jezebel. He cried to the Lord, “It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life” (1 Kings 19:4). Being human, he displayed his humanness perfectly – being isolated from his friends, being hunted by Jezebel, Ahab and all of Israel’s armies. He cried to the Lord again, “Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have demolished your altars; I alone am left, and they are seeking my life” (Rom. 11:3).

Then came a great wind, that split the mountains and broke the stones; then an earthquake and a fire. It would have been absolutely overwhelming. Then the Bible tells us that a “still small voice” came (1 Kings 19:12), the voice of God, a whisper from God. The voice tells him of the judgement of God that was coming, a voice that calms him down and brought peace upon him.

Look at us. When we are faced with overwhelming difficulties and sufferings in our lives, we tend to lose hope. We tend to focus solely on the circumstances that surround us. We invariably see only the winds, earthquakes and fires of our lives and we often fail to hear the “still small voice” of the Lord that comes after them.

God’s whispers to us of His peace, of His presence and of His plans for us all the time. May we listen to it and trust in Him. Zephaniah 3:17 says, “The Lord, your God, is in your midst, a warrior who gives victory.” Let us keep aside our worries and listen to God’s whisper, to the still small voice beyond the towering troubles of the world.
