Getting up early

As I read the book of Joshua, I came upon several instances where it was recorded that Joshua got up early in the morning (3:1; 6:12; 7:16; 8:10). I began to wonder: why? As I wondered, I began to realise that the Bible speaks more of worshipping the LORD in the morning, prayer in the morning and praising the LORD in the morning than about staying up late at night (Gen. 19:27; Ex. 9:13; 32:6; 1 Sam. 1:19; Ps. 5:3;119:147; Prov. 31:15; Mk. 1:35; 16:2 etc). Psalm 63:1 says, “Early in the morning will i rise up and seek you.”

These days, getting up late seems to be the fashion. We do not see young people in the morning anymore. Even though the Bible does not tell us directly, “do not stay up late at night, get up early every morning,” I think we can safely surmise that none of the great men of God, in or out of the Bible were late risers.

Anyway, it is not a good habit for Christians to wake up late. We are not here to talk of the health benefits (if there are any) of getting up early, we are just talking about the inference we see in the Bible.

Let us get up early too, and spend our time with the LORD, giving Him thanks, and dedicating our day to Him. I see the prayer warriors who pray every morning are the backbone of the Church.
