Two signs of a wise man

Proverbs 17:27 says, “One who spares words is knowledgeable; one who is cool in spirit has understanding.” Here we see two signs of a wise man:

  1. One who spares words, or one who has command over his tongue. Rare have they become in this world. Though the tongue is small, it has become increasingly difficult to tame (cf Jam. 3:1-12).
  2. One who is cool in spirit, or one who has a cool temper. As the world is now in a hurry, everyone is now in a hurry. In such a time, a person who can hold his cool has become more and more difficult to find.

Let these two signs also be found in us by sparing our words, and keeping our cool.
