“Yet if you say so, I will let down the nets”

Lk. 5:1-11

I love fishing. I used to go fishing every opportunity I get. The size of the fish really does not matter. Those days when I was really into it, I would get up before the sun rises, and go fishing the whole day. The more you go fishing, the more your knowledge about fishing increase. You know where fishes will be, if they will bite and so on.

Simon Peter was also a fisherman. He was from Bethsaida, near the Sea of Galilee. He earned his living fishing, and he would have known all there is to know about catching fishes.

But one night, they could not catch any fish. They spent the whole night casting nets, but they caught none. The next day, as they were washing their nets, the Lord came and got into one of the boats of Simon and began to teach the crowd that were following Him.

As He finished, He said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.” “What?” If I were Simon Peter, I would probably say that. I would have also doubted. Simon also said to the Lord, “Master, we have worked all night long but have caught nothing.” But Simon Peter also said, “Yet if you say so, I will let down the nets.” And as he lets down his nets, they caught more than their nets could hold and their nets started to break!

What faith!

As we reel under different hardships, we feel as if everything we have done have been pointless. Our services and efforts seem to have gone in vain. But, we must remember that the LORD is asking us to cast our nets into deeper waters for a catch. He is asking us to do more.

More often than not, our unbelief and half-hearted efforts could have been the reason for much of our failures and ineffectiveness in our ministries and services to the LORD.

Trusting in the LORD, and going deeper and doing more in the face of doubts and hardships will yield results because the LORD says so.

Let us put aside our human ideas and faulty wisdoms and also say, “Yet if you say so, I will let down the nets.” Victory belongs to the LORD.
