To be faithful to the LORD
Mk. 6:14-29
Herod was a strange man. He married Herodias, his brother’s wife. John the Baptist knew this and said to Herod that what he did was wrong. Herodias did not take this lightly. She wanted revenge. She wanted to kill him somehow.
On the day of Herod’s birthday, many noble men and high ranking soldiers came to him. As they feasted, Herodias’ daughter came to dance for them. Herod was so pleased that he promised to give her whatever she wanted. Asking her mother what she would ask, her mother advised her to ask for John the Baptist’s head on a platter.
Herod became worried because of this request. But because of his guests, Herod ordered the beheading of John.
It is quite easy to say that we are Christians among fellow believers or among people we know. But it becomes difficult in front of someone else we try to impress.
Herod was also trying to protect his name and status among his friends by not recanting on his promise. He was also afraid to follow his own belief in front of others. He committed a very great blunder.
Like Herod, there are many Christians who would betray themselves and their beliefs in order to save themselves little embarrassments.
Let us really think today. Where have we betrayed Him who saved us.
