Shamgar and his ox goad

Jdg. 3:31

Shamgar is mentioned in only two places in the Bible – Judges 3:31 and 5:6. But he was a very important saviour of Israel. He killed 600 Philistines with his ox goad, which was not even a weapon, in the strict sense of the term.

The Philistines were growing powerful during his time. But Shamgar stood up and did what he could and used what he had where he was. We see three very important lessons:

  1. We ought to do what we could in fighting against sin, instead of silently suffering under it.
  2. We must not simply expect to have shiny weapons; but use what we have to fight against sin.
  3. We must fight sin wherever we are. That should be where the battle begin.
