David’s greatness

2 Sam. 5:10

David had been wandering and suffering for a very long time. But the LORD protected him. In the end, he became the king – first over Judah for 7 years and six months, and later over all Israel for 33 years. Though his beginning was small, he became the greatest king the Israelites had ever known and will know. He took Jerusalem and named it the City of David. He defeated his enemies and consolidated his kingdom.

1 Samuel 5:10 says, “And David became greater and greater, for the LORD, the God of hosts, was with him.” This was the secret of David’s greatness. His greatness lies not in his army, friends or his wisdom, but in the LORD.

On what do our greatnesses’ lie today? Do our ‘greatness’ lie only in our material wealth and knowledge? They are mere mirrors and vain glories.

Let our greatness also be the LORD our God.
