Christ, the living water

Ex. 17:6-7; 1 Cor. 10:4

The Israelites had crossed the Red Sea. After a while, they became hungry and began to mutter about all they had in Egypt. God gave them food (manna). Then they thirsted and blamed Moses for their misery. With the LORD’s instruction, Moses struck the rock and from the rock flowed water which the Israelites drank.

1 Corinthians 10:4 tells us that “the rock was Christ.” In similar terms, Christ Himself said, “Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water’” (Jn. 7:37-38).

How wonderful it is to be drinking water when we thirst the most. Christ also came for sinners when we need Him most to save us. Everyone who drinks of Christ, the living water and the rock will thirst no more, but will have everlasting life (cf. Jer. 17:13; Zech. 14:8-9; Jn. 3:16; 4:14;Rev. 7:13-17).
