Josef and Jesus Christ
We have been talking about Joseph four times so far. Today we will make it the fifth by looking into the similarities between him and Jesus Christ.
- Joseph was loved and adored by his father (Gen. 37:3) just as the Father was pleased with Jesus (Mat. 4:17).
- Joseph was hated by his brothers (Gen. 37:4-5); and Jesus was despised by the Jews (Jn. 7:5; 15:27).
- His brothers did not want Joseph to rule over them (Gen. 37:8); Jesus was rejected likewise by the Jews (Lk. 19:14).
- Joseph’s brothers devised plans against him (Gen. 37:23) just as the Jews plotted against Jesus (Mat. 27:1).
- They took off Joseph’s clothes (Gen. 37:23) just like Jesus (Mat. 27:8).
- Joseph was thron into the pit (Gen. 37:24); so was Jesus who later rose (Lk. 23:50-56; Eph. 4:9).
- Joseph was sold (Gen. 37:28) so was Jesus (Mat. 26:15).
- Joseph was tempted, but came out victorious (Gen. 39:30); Jesus was tempted, yet did not sin (Mat. 4:1-11; Heb. 4:15).
- Joseph was tied (Gen. 39:30) like Jesus (Mat. 27:2).
- Joseph was falsely accused (Gen. 39:19, 20); Jesus was also false accused by false witnesses (Mk. 14:56).
- Joseph was imprisoned along with others (Gen. 40:2-3); Jesus was also counted among sinners and was crucified with two other sinners (Lk. 23:32).
- One convict who was with Joseph was set free (Gen. 40:21-22) and one sinner crucified with Jesus was saved (Lk. 23:43).
- His brothers bowed down to Joseph (Gen. 41:43; 42:6; 43:26, 28); every one shall bow down to Jesus (Phil. 2:10).
- Joseph was 30 years of age when he stood before Pharaoh (Gen. 41:46); Jesus was about 30 years of age when he began to teach (Lk. 3:23).
- Joseph was led to be the saviour of many (Gen. 41:46); Jesus saves His people (Mat. 1:21).
- Joseph was appointed to rule over Egypt (Gen. 41:42-44); Jesus has been given all authority in heaven and earth (Mat. 28:18).
We see the image of Jesus throughout the Bible. This similarity, or a type of Jesus in Joseph is only one instance. You see, the Bible is in complete harmony with itself. From this we can understand how the LORD is faithful to his promise, how the Bible is trustworthy, and how the LORD has been merciful to sinners.
