Seeking God Only in Trouble

1 Ki. 14

Jeroboam did not repent even after he had been reprimanded and warned by the man of God who came from Judah. In fact, “even after this event Jeroboam did not turn from his evil way, but made priests for the high places again from among all the people; any who wanted to be priests he consecrated for the high places.” (1 Ki. 13:33).

He was the king, and he was the reigning king. He was strong, and he did not listen.

In time, his son Abijah became sick. He sent his wife to the prophet Ahijah to make enquiries about his son. What the prophet told him was all bad for him.

This made me think.

Many of us today are in our prime. We are also strong and are expecting a good future. We are also working hard. But, while we are still in our prime, or at least while we can, let us properly listen to the words of the LORD that we hear, listen, read and see every day. If not, running to the LORD only when we are weak would not be the right thing to do. We know that the LORD is always welcoming us if we turn to Him; but we are saying that we should do our part for Him too, while we can. Let us be reminded that we will not always be strong and healthy. Jeroboam never went to Bethel and Dan to pray to his golden calves. He enquired from the prophet of the LORD.

To ignore the LORD while we are strong and to come to Him only when we are in need is not the way  good Christians should live.
