The false and true king

1 Kings 1:28-53

Yesterday, we talked about how Adonijah attempted to make himself the king without David’s knowledge and looked into how we have also made worldly things rule over us. Today we will continue the story.

When David heard of this, he quickly made Solomon king, and Zadok the priest anointed Solomon. Then, the people blew the trumpet and everyone shouted, “Long live king Solomon” (1 Ki. 1:39). “And all the people went up following him, playing on pipes and rejoicing with great joy, so that the earth quaked at their noise” (1 Ki. 1:40). What a noise and sight it would have been!

When Adonijah and all those with him heard of this, they became afraid and they went their own ways. Adonijah also became afraid and got up and went to grasp the horns of the altar. Though he seemed to have been powerful in the beginning, he ended up just like a shivering little puppy. Solomon then told him, “Go home” (1 Ki. 1:53). That was a very shameful end for the false king.

In our lives, we serve so many false kings who seemed powerful and attractive. But when the true king comes, the false ones will shrivel up and disappear. Now, Satan may seem powerful and strong, but when the true King comes, Satan will not be able to face Him. The false king may look “handsome” (1 Ki. 1:6) and glorious now. It is also said, “The sword may be burnished, the armour be bright” (SSS #694, “Who’s on the Lord’s side?”), but the enemy will lose before Jesus Christ.

Let us stop following the false king. If not, what will happen to us when the true king comes?

Deut. 28:13, 44; Lam. 1:1, 5 In Deuteronomy 28, we see the blessings for obedience and warnings against disobedience.
