Not even half…

1 Ki. 10:7

King Solomon was a great king. “The whole earth sought the presence of Solomon to hear his wisdom, which God had put into his mind” (1 Ki. 10:24). The queen of Sheba also heard of his wisdom and “she came to test him with hard wuestions” (1 Ki. 10:1). But “Solomon answered all her questions; there was nothing hidden from the king that he could not explain to her” (1 Ki. 10:3). The queen also saw with her own eyes, the splendour, greatness, wealth and majesty of Solomon and exclaimed that she had heard reports of all these, but “not even half had been told me” (1 Ki. 10:7). She continued, “Happy are your men! Happy are these your servants who continually attend you and hear your wisdom!” (1 Ki. 10:8).

  1. How are we known, us who worship the one true God, to others? The God we worship today is still the God who gave Solomon all his wisdom. It is therefore our responsibility to also live exemplary lives so that others may know of our kindness and wisdom for the glory of the LORD.
  2. We see that all wisdom, wealth and grandeur belongs to the LORD. We have been seeking these things in other places and we have been beset with worries. Let us come back to the true source of wisdom and wealth.
  3. The greatness and glory of God is known by everyone who draws near Him. The more they know Him, the more they understand that “not even half had been told” them.
  4. Do we realise how fortunate and blessed we really are? The mere person whom God gave wisdom was known throughout history as the wise and rich king. Sheba also envied the servants and men who were under him. What about us who worship the same God every day? Do we really understand how fortunate we also are?
