Cleansing the temple
Mat. 21:12-17; Mk. 11:15-19; Lk. 19:45-48; Jn. 2:13-22
Jesus Christ, before He went in to cleanse the temple, rebuked the fig tree which withered later on. Then, He went into the temple to cleanse it.
Let us think of two things here:
- The fig tree had leaves and maybe it was attractive and pleasing to the eye. But it never had any fruit. There are many people looking flashy and great on the outside, but empty on the inside. Which one are we?
- The temple had become a marketplace. This shows the state of its neglect. Churches may not exactly be literal marketplaces, but everyone of us are also temples of the living God (cf 1 Cor. 3:16-17; 6:19-20). Maybe we have also become dens of robbers too. Let us also cleanse ourselves with the blood of Jesus Christ and make ourselves worthy of Him.
