Death and Burial of Jesus

John 19:38-42

When Jesus was arrested and put on trial to be killed, many of His disciples and followers deserted Him. As He was crucified, He said, “It is finished” and bowed His head and gave up His Spirit. After His death, Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus came and took His body and bound it with linen cloths with spices laid Him at a new tomb in a garden.

Let us look at four points from this story:

  1. Many people left Jesus. But in the end, it was Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus who took His body. They were not even disciples, but secret followers of Jesus. How important it is not to leave even when everyone else decide to.
  2. Jesus was buried. This shows that He died for real. The Romans also saw that He was already dead (Jn. 19:33). The wages of sin is death, and so, Jesus died (Gen. 2:15-17; Rom. 6:23). This death of Jesus was a necessity (Heb. 9:22). That He died for our sins is made very clear.
  3. Because Jesus died, He was resurrected. If He had not died, He would not resurrect. His resurrection also means that we are also resurrected in to new life. Hebrews 7:25 says, “He is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.”
  4. He was buried in a tomb in the garden. Sin came in the garden. Sin was defeated in this garden.

Mk 11:27-33 Jesus was asked about His authority. Is. 59:16 Why would the Creator of everything be in wonderment? What would be so intriguing?
