Guarding Jesus’ Tomb

When Jesus was buried, the high priests and the Pharisees requested Pilate to guard the tomb. The tomb was then guarded and sealed (Mat. 27:66). But, Jesus rose anyway. The priests and elders now had to come up with some lies to placate themselves and others telling them, “Tell people His disciples came by night and stole him away” (Mat. 28:13). They were afraid they they might lose their authority.

  1. The leaders were afraid to lose their authority and devised lies and deceit. In following Jesus, to what do we still hold on?
  2. The leaders did not want others to know of Jesus’ resurrection. They stood in the way of others knowing of this good news. Where do we stand? On the way of others? I believe that many Christians today are standing in the way of others coming to our Lord. Bishops, Pastors, Elders trying to hold on to their powers have been great stumbling blocks for other Christians and non-Christians.
  3. Jesus is the truth. Anyone else who stands in His way had to devise some falsehood. Lies and deceit are things our Lord abhors.
